Latest Award Winners At Whiskey Creek Press!
In award ceremonies held in Austin, Texas last month, Dream Realm announced “Best Of” winners in various writing categories. Congratulations to WCP author Daniel Wilder for his science fiction thriller IMPACT VECTOR, which was named “Best Science Fiction Book For 2005!” Congratulations too to WCP author Steven Douglas Womack, whose book CYCLOPEAN RESCUE was named Runner-up Finalist For “Best Science Fiction Book for 2005.” WCP salutes these two outstanding Science Fiction award-winning authors!
You can meet and greet some of the WCP authors at:
Sherry Derr-Wille has a busy month ahead of her for September: It starts with DOUBLE M: THE MALLONS coming out September 1st. This is the first in a four book series about the men and women who live and love on both the Double M Ranch and in the town of Corbit, Montana.
September 8 Sherry will be reading at Read-A-Thon at the Hedburg Public Library in Janesville, WI. I, along with several other authors, civic leaders, and celebrities will be reading for 5-10 minutes to promote literacy. She will be reading from one of my own books for this special event.
September 10, Debbie Fritter joins Sherry at the Paranormal Conference at the Best Western in Janesville. Debbie will be promoting A LEGACY THROUGH TIME, which was named the BEST ROMANCE BOOK OF THE YEAR 2005 by Fallen Angel Reviews. Sherry will be promoting two other Whiskey Creek Press titles, her BIRDSINGER SERIES and her Number One Bestseller WHEN THEIR WORLD DIED.
On September 23, Sherry will be signing books at the WRWA conference (Wisconsin Regional Writers Association) at the Ramada Inn in Janesville, WI.
On September 24, Sherry will be one of the authors at an Author Event in Edgerton, WI. Since Edgerton is a town built on the money of the tobacco barons, we will be signing books in an old tobacco warehouse.
Sherry will end the month with fellow WCP authors Debbie Fritter and Alice Blue (SIXTEEN GOLD NUGGETS) going to Fall Fest in Lake Mills, WI. All three authors had stories in the Jewels Of The Quill award-winning book TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE VOLUME ONE, which won the prestigious EPPIE for Best Anthology 2005. This is an outdoor festival and all three authors will be signing copies of their books at a booth.
Sherrill Quinn, author of DRAGON’S BANE from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid has an author day at Love Romances Café on October 2nd from 9-9. (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LoveRomancesCafe)
Bryn Colvin, author of THE ENORMOUS PARSNIP from Whiskey Creek Press Torrid, has a giveaway in September, specifically for people who have already bought one of her fabulous reads. To enter, email Bryn at bryn@hollowhills.fsnet.co.uk with the title of the book by Bryn you have, and tell her who its dedicated to. Every participant will receive a copy of her short story 'In At The Deep end'. Bryn says: “This is swing erotica, and was previously published in a paperback anthology. If you would like a free story but really don't want to read something graphic, let me know and I'll find you an alternative title. I want to give a little something extra to all the people who have supported my work.”

THE
SEPTEMBER WCP INTERVIEW WITH
JEWELS
OF THE QUILL
JEWELS OF THE QUILL is a group of multi-award winning authors who have appeared in several anthologies published by Whiskey Creek Press. One, TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE VOLUME I, won the prestigious EPPIE for Best Anthology 2005 in award ceremonies in San Antonio, Texas attended by WCP publisher Debra Womack and some of the Jewels themselves, including Sherry Derr-Wille, Alice Blue, and Debbie Fritter. TALES I also won the Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award For Best Small Press Romance.
REGAN TAYLOR of Whiskey Creek Press talked to several of the JEWELS about their exciting new release TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE VOLUME II, the follow-up to TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE VOLUME I.
REGAN: Hi! I am so excited with the chance to talk to you all. My first introduction was when I had the opportunity to do the final proof on TREASURES OF THE HEART and I got so hooked. Each story is so romantic, and I personally enjoyed the varying lengths so there was always one I could sit and enjoy and finish a story before moving on. So, who are the Jewels of the Quill?
KAREN WIESNER: Jewels of the Quill is a group of award-winning women authors. We write in over 40 categories of fiction, nonfiction, and everything in between. Among the 12 authors in the group, we've had over 250 books published with 65 contracted for by 73 publishers. We've won or been finalists for more than 150 awards. Our books are available in mass-market paperback, trade paperback, hardcover, electronic, Large Print, and audio formats. In short, we offer something for every reader.
REGAN: Can you tell us a little about yourselves personally and why you joined the group?
CHRISTINE DESMET: I teach writing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and put on
conferences for writers. I'm a novelist, but also a busy professional screenwriter working with Hollywood. I joined the Jewels of the Quill because Karen Wiesner, the founder, knew I'd earned awards for my novel- writing, including a Golden Heart. The Jewels as a group focuses on
quality writing.
LIZ HUNTER: I write contemporary romance, often with a suspense element. My full-time job plus writing commitments keep me out of trouble, but I'm short on time and money for promotion, hence the promo group.
NANCY PIRRI: An author doesn't just 'join' Jewels of the Quill, but is 'nominated' by other Jewels. I was frankly astonished when I received an invitation from Karen to become a member of this fabulous writing organization. I can't think of a better opportunity to promote myself as a
writer. I feel very lucky and blessed to be a member.
JANE TOOMBS: I'm a multi-published, award-winning author who joined Jewels of the Quill for several reasons. True, it's less expensive to promote as a group, but a good part of the reason I chose Jewels is because I knew most of the authors, including Karen Wiesner. At the beginning, I don't think any of us realized what a terrific organizer and promoter Karen really is, plus a talented artist. I certainly appreciate her skills.
KAREN WIESNER: I'm an accomplished author with 30 books published in the past 8 years, which have been nominated/won 47 awards, and 23 more titles under contract. My books cover such genres as women's fiction, romance, mystery/police procedural/cozy, suspense, paranormal, futuristic, gothic, inspirational, thriller, horror and action/adventure. I'm also the author of writing reference such as my bestseller, First Draft in 30 Days, available from Writer's Digest Books, and children's books and poetry. I actually founded Jewels of the Quill in July 2003. With so many books to promote, I was looking for a way to get the maximum promotional
exposure possible in a way I simply couldn't afford to do on my own. Jewels of the Quill has, hands-down, been the most effective promotional method I've ever used. It's very true that there is strength in numbers. I knew there had to be other authors who couldn't promote as much as they wanted to on their own either. While membership in Jewels of the Quill has changed here and there, we always have something fresh to offer our visitors and fans.
REGAN: Each of you has a story featured in the new Jewels of the Quill anthology, TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE, VOLUME II, which has just been released. Please tell us a little about your contribution.
CHRISTINE: "Misbehavin' in Moonstone" is about the upheaval that happens in a small town on the shores of Lake Superior when a topless fishing tour business puts down anchor. All the men suddenly go fishing and it's my heroine's job to save the town and turn the tables on the tycoon who owns the business. It's definitely humorous romantic mystery. It's meant to
entertain and warm the heart.
LIZ: Mike and LeeAnn in "Garnet Lake" are old friends and lovers who find each other again, and in the process, find the missing piece of a dangerous mystery.
NANCY: Sapphire Jameson, a spinster-school teacher in “For The Love Of Sapphire,” learns that her brother, George, has wagered away his inheritance and is begging for hers as well since the debt hasn't been paid in full. Sapphire leaves her teaching position at a New York City school and arrives in St. Louis, ready to straighten things out. She soon learns her brother is indebted to her brother's childhood friend, Patrick Falconer, the same man to whom she'd been engaged eight years ago. She'd broken their engagement, believing neighborhood gossip about his possible involvement with another woman. Sapphire has learned from her brother that Patrick's wife died four years ago in childbirth, leaving him sons to raise. Patrick needs a nanny for the boys. He offers the position to Sapphire to help her pay off her brother's debt. She's never forgiven him for his betrayal, but with no other choice, she accepts. Having Sapphire in his home, Patrick wants nothing more than to win her into his arms, his bed, and his heart again. His heart's desire is make this precious jewel his own.
JANE: Since I'm Dame Turquoise, all of my stories in the Treasure Trove anthology series feature this gem in the each title and each story. "The Turquoise Cat" came to me after reading about cougar sightings in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the reluctance of the Department of Natural Resources to confirm the existence of these big cats in this area.
KAREN: I dreamed the basic plot of my futuristic romance novella, "The Amethyst Star" for TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE, Volume II, in which humans nearly become an extinct species. What I love so much about futuristics is the irony of the situations. In my dream, the hero was a
hunter of the carnivores that stalk the people of Earth. In the end, only love can save him from becoming a carnivore himself. Also, the plot of this story is that the remaining humans are attempting to scientifically breed offspring in laboratories. Males and females who prove unsuccessful in doing this are banished, where they are then allowed to live their lives freely in family groups-the way the Creator intended. This is my first futuristic, but it definitely won't be my last.
REGAN: How do you pick the themes you are going to use for each story?
CHRISTINE: My themes burst from the characters and their needs or desires. In "Misbehavin' in Moonstone," for example, my lead character has started Moonstone's first fine dining restaurant. This is her first real job, but she also has come home to Moonstone with her mother who needs the peace and quiet of the North Woods. So Kirsten has everything at stake when tycoon Jonathon decides to take all her business away with his fishing tours starring topless waitresses. My theme is about the adjustments it takes to go back to live in a hometown after years away. Kirsten soon finds a lot of unexpected things happen to her.
LIZ: My characters in “Garnet Lake” generally set the stage for the story. The dynamics between them lead me into the plot and their emotions.
NANCY: I love the historical genre, the American West, in particular. All of our stories are 'themed' around our chosen jewel. Mine is the sapphire. So, in my story, "For the Love of Sapphire," in TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE, VOLUME II, my heroine's name is Sapphire.
JANE: The theme for any story I write sort of picks me. Since I enjoy writing and reading paranormal romance, the theme has to fit that genre.
KAREN: Theme seems to come naturally in the storytelling for me, so I rarely pick a theme before I start writing. Often, though, I find a theme cropping up after a book is done, and I'll realize I want to base an entire series of stories on this theme. I've done this so often, I think
my readers expect each of my books to be a part of a series. Also, as others have said, for all the TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE volumes, a jewel must be a part of the story in some capacity-either in an object, a name, a town, eye color. Whatever the author can come up with to include her Dame jewel. As my Dame jewel is amethyst and I plan to participate in every volume, I'll have to especially creative in the coming years.
REGAN: Pick one female character from one of your Jewels of the Quill anthology
stories that you would most like to be like and tell us why.
CHRISTINE: Crystal Hagan in "When Rudolph Gets Kidnapped," from SMALL GIFTS is an exciting woman who is clever and resourceful. I'd like to be her. She teaches first graders (and thus her need to be clever), but she also runs a small farm filled with fun animals. Crystal is the first heroine in my MISCHIEF IN MOONSTONE Series. Her curiosity is responsible for introducing us to the Santa Claus living in the mansion and his handsome son, Peter, who may have kidnapped her reindeer just before the holiday.
LIZ: LeeAnn in "Garnet Lake" is one kick-butt heroine. She's brave enough to get herself out of trouble, and even more important, admit her love for the hero. Wish I had her brave spirit.
NANCY: Laura Woodbury in TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE, VOLUME III (coming out from Whiskey Creek Press in March 2007). Laura is wealthy, owns her own prosperous ranch. She's independent and headstrong, not to mention intelligent and is able to take care of herself-and that's in 1870's Montana. But she also butts heads with a slightly alpha-arrogant male who takes his duty seriously in this case, marrying her off to a suitable man, per Laura's late father's will.
JANE: Ella Rose is the heroine in "The Turquoise Talisman" in TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE VOLUME THREE (coming out from Whiskey Creek Press in 2007). I chose the name from the first and middle name of my Life Partner's great granddaughter because I liked the sound of them. Why pick her as the one I'd most like to be? Because she's a strong
woman who learns to love an exceedingly strange man, one who's not really human - but what a hero!
KAREN: I have a tendency to write heroines who are in less than ideal circumstances, so I doubt I'd enjoy being any of them. In "The Amethyst Angel" (in TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE, VOLUME I), the heroine Elena is a doctor of terminally ill patients. In "A Home for Christmas" (in SMALL GIFTS), Christie is hung up on the brother of Mr. Right (and she does eventually realize he is her Mr. Right through their many misadventures in this story). In "A Rose for Romeo" (in TREASURES OF THE HEART), Melina is a sex therapist who's had to endure too much horror in her practice, which haunts her and drives her to the only home she's ever felt safe. and into the arms of her sister's old (gorgeous!) boyfriend. The sequel to "A Rose for Romeo" is "Revenge in Amethyst" (TALES III, coming in 2007) in which one of Melina's former (psychotic) patients comes after her for revenge. In "The Amethyst
Star" (TALES II), Lady Sher is scheduled to be the savior of her people, expected to produce offspring for the human race. and thereby have no life or choices of her own. Finally, Amy in "Papa" (SHADOWS IN THE HEART, coming in 2007) is a woman overwhelmed with guilt for getting involved with a married man, Rand Parker, who eventually left his wife and children for her. Now married to that man herself, Amy contends with the guilt left since Rand's wife and two children died in a car accident. Ever since, Amy has had terrible nightmares in which Rand's son and daughter return to exact revenge on their father and Amy herself for abandoning them. When Rand convinces Amy to come away with him for a healing respite to an isolated cabin in the woods, her guilt-filled nightmares turn into pure horror. If I had to choose, I'd say Christie is the one I'd most like to be like since she's about to find her heart's desire and the answer to a lifetime
of prayer.
REGAN: I understand that Karen Wiesner (Dame Amethyst) designs all the covers for Jewels of the Quill anthologies. Which cover of an anthology do you like the most and why?
CHRISTINE: I like the SMALL GIFTS anthology cover the best because it really matches the gems inside. It's pretty and stands out on the "shelf" at the Whiskey Creek bookstore or any store. That cover has simple elegance, which I like for book covers.
LIZ: The latest is always my favorite cover because Karen out-does herself with each one.
NANCY: Oh, it's difficult to choose! As I look at them side by side, I love the current TALES II cover the best. Love the items on the cover and the color scheme. We are so lucky to have Karen do this for us.
JANE: My choice is predictable since I'm into paranormal-the cover for SHADOWS IN THE HEART. But I'm also thrilled with the cover she designed for the collection of my own "Dame" stories WCP will publish in 2008, NORTH OF NONESUCH Series, spectacularly spooky. [You can see a preview of it here: http://www.angelfire.com/stars4/kswiesner/KarensCoverDesigns6.html#nonesuch]
KAREN: When I design a cover for a Jewels of the Quill anthology, I always know it has to contain a jewel somewhere on it. Our first anthology, oddly enough, didn't have that. I'm not thrilled with that one, but it was chosen by majority vote of the members, so that was the one we went with. The holiday anthology covers were a bit trickier, since I wanted to have a jewel, but it isn't always easy to find something that fits a particular holiday. By chance, I found a graphic of a Christmas tree made all of jewels, so that was what I used for the first Christmas anthology. The Valentine's Day anthology was simple, and it seems to match the Christmas one. My favorite of all the covers I've designed for Jewels of the Quill anthologies is currently the Halloween anthology cover (you can see it on the JOTQ website, holiday anthology page). I wanted something that captured the darkness of the title and of most (though not all - this anthology has both horror and humor) of the stories in it. I also love the cover of TALES II.
REGAN: Are you individually working on anything right now and can you tell us a little about these projects?
CHRISTINE: I'm working on a novel and a play at the moment. The novel is about a woman cook who leaves Chicago to go to Wyoming where she gets involved in a cattle drive against her better judgment and ends up in the middle of murders on a ranch. It has humor! Trust me! The play is about a writer and his plight over a book but I can't say more until it's done.
LIZ: What I call my LOVE ON THE HIGH SEAS Series is two-thirds completed. Look for FOOTLOOSE and BLUE WATER, both currently available (visit my website for details). The third book, SAIL AWAY, is an April 2007 release, and I'm just about to start the manuscript.
NANCY: I'm trying my hand at a time-travel, based on a true-life book I read a few years ago about women lighthouse keepers.
JANE: I will have two bonus stories in the NORTH OF NONESUCH Series collection, as well as all my stories from the TALES anthologies. I'm working on one bonus story, "Capricorn Capers," set, as all my NORTH OF NONESUCH stories are, in today's world in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Much of the story, though, takes place on the Isle of Capri in the time of the Pan, the pagan god. I'm having fun with it.
KAREN: I've completed the bonus story for DAME AMETHYST TREASURES, a paranormal romance named "Creatures of the Night." This collection will be published by Whiskey Creek Press July 2007 and will also include "The Amethyst Angel" (from TALES I), "A Home from Christmas" (from SMALL GIFTS), and "The Amethyst Star" (from TALES II).
"Reckless Rose" (Story 3) and "Christmas in Amethyst" (Story 4) are the two bonus stories in my "Dame" collection called ADVENTURES IN AMETHYST Series (coming September 2007 from Whiskey Creek Press). This collection will also include "A Rose for Romeo," Story 1 of the series (originally included in TREASURES OF THE HEART) and "Revenge in Amethyst," Story 2 (coming March 2007 in Tales III).
I've also completed BOUNTY ON THE REBEL’S HEART (Book 3 of the Incognito Series, coming March 2007 from Whiskey Creek Press), DEAD DROP (Book 4, July 2007), as well as the outline for UNDER THE SPELL (Book 5, October 2007). I'll start writing that book in September. In addition, I'm working on proposals for the 2008 Jewels of the Quill anthologies, including: CHRISTMAS WISHES, our second Christmas anthology, and TALES FROM THE TREASURE TROVE, VOLUME IV. My stories for these anthologies are completed.
Finally, (whew!) I'm working on my second writing reference proposal to Writer's Digest Books, which I hope to sell to them this year. Check my website for updates on current projects: http://www.karenwiesner.com (WIP).
REGAN: How about future Jewels of the Quill anthologies? Are you involved in any others, and can we get a teaser from your story(ies)?
CHRISTINE: I'm cooking up surprises for the final stories in my MISCHIEF IN MOONSTONE Series which will be featured in three Jewels anthologies: Halloween, TALES III, and my own collection, MISCHIEF IN MOONSTONE Series, coming out in April 2008. The characters of Moonstone are going to have some babies and weddings and many surprises for my readers. My story in the new September release, TALES II, lays out a lot of clues to the surprises to come. I hope readers have fun predicting what might happen in little Moonstone in the coming months.
LIZ: "Garnet Nights" is my story in TALES III. You can read an excerpt on the Jewels of the Quill website.
NANCY: I'm in the process of editing a 50,000-word story in my very own Dame Collection, DAME SAPPHIRE TREASURES, which will be released by Whiskey Creek Press sometime late 2007 or early 2008. It's a contemporary romance and it's really a story that means a lot to me since it evolves around adoption. My husband and I were blessed when we adopted
two daughters. The story follows the life of Maggie O'Hara, a social worker in Chicago. She's single, late twenties, and wants to have children-but not marriage for reasons I won't mention at this time. Maggie is an escort for the adoption agency where she's employed and has applied to adopt a child from Korea. She's astonished and glad when she picks up her own 'bundle of joy' at the airport earlier than expected. She also learns within weeks of her baby's arrival that the Korean adoption agency won't approve the adoption because she's single. She knew the rules before applying but hoped they'd make an exception for her. They won't, so she does the next best thing she can think of to keep her baby-proposing marriage - to a perfect strange.
JANE: As I mentioned above, WCP will be publishing my own "Dame" collection in 2008. Before then, I'll have a NORTH OF NONESUCH Series story in TALES III ("The Turquoise Talisman"), TALES IV ("Turquoise Twilight") and the 2008 CHRISTMAS WISHES anthology. In "Turquoise Twilight," Talissa Hunter takes her dream-of-a-lifetime trip to European vampire country and is disappointed not to meet any "creatures of fantasy" as her friend calls them. In a romantic encounter on the way home, she rescues what she believes to be a wounded man. She's thrilled when he turns up at her place in North of Nonesuch country, but what will happen when she discovers what he really is? In "Are You Listening?" (CHRISTMAS WISHES), a six-year-old's wish to have her missing daddy back for Christmas uncovers a dark and deadly secret...
KAREN: As I said, the second book in my ADVENTURES IN AMETHYST Series, REVENGE IN AMETHYST will be published in TALES III (March 2007). The first book in my Woodcutter's Grim Series - Classic Tales of Horror Re-told is called "Papa" and will be included in our first Halloween anthology (September 2007). "Papa" is kind of a play of the children's story Hansel and Gretel. Book 2 of the Woodcutter's Grim Series is “Blood of Amethyst” (based on the children's story Rumpelstitskin) and will be included in TALES IV. And I'll start my new Kaleidoscope Series with a fun contemporary romance called "Perfect Cadence" for our second Christmas anthology, CHRISTMAS WISHES. You can find information about excerpts
from all of these stories on my website.
